Make it stand out
Hawai'i Council for the Humanities Project
Ho'ohui Maika'i, can be translated as "good combination." Experiencing various combinations, we are Molokai women on our journeys to knowing ourselves.
Our focus is on our experiences of "mixedness" (including diverse cultures, ethnicities, races, languages, and religions) and our food practices (including gathering, preparing, eating, and sustaining).
We'll explore, share, or reclaim our stories and how stories passed down, help shape us (or not). We draw on mo’olelo, myths, tales, and cultural and spiritual influences for inspiration and illumination.
As women, we are a major influential force in our families and community. When we deeply connect to our past lineage and stories about who we are and want to be, we can transform our lives, our family community, and, eventually, the larger community and society.
In small groups, whether in a workshop or family setting, we worked with words, images, and insights about our own "mixedness" and family food practices. We have collected our writings and visuals to share with our families and community in this collaborative anthology
